U.S. Transportation Policy & Trends Timeline

In timeline pages, I highlight some of the major decisions, developments, and trends of the US national transportation policy and behavior since the 1800s as they relate to the transportation choices, habits, and perceptions of the Americans.

After the 1800s, I did not delve into transportation modes involving waterways and airways - focusing instead on over-land transportation.

In places where I offered comments, my intention was to put events in a context that would help to make history a little less destiny-like and more like a result of certain deliberate efforts and choices. Such a contextualization, I hoped, would help to explain the low status of bicycle in the U.S. as a transportation mode.

I would be more than happy to receive any comments or contributions on any part of this timeline.
